Since 2020, Nigeria has witnessed one of the most significant exoduses of skilled professionals in Africa. In 2023 alone, over 16,000 Nigerian-trained doctors registered abroad. And that’s just one profession. What was once a concern has morphed into an undeniable reality, where the numbers tell a story of loss and potential that is hard to ignore.

The reasons behind this migration are multifaceted and deeply rooted in systemic issues. Poor infrastructure hampers productivity; rampant insecurity stifles peace of mind and progress; low wages fail to compensate for hard work and talent; and an environment that often stifles creativity and innovation keeps many from realizing their full potential. It is critical to understand that while the talent is abundant, the systems in place are what fail to nurture and support these gifted individuals.

However, the tale of Nigeria is not solely one of despair. Amidst the challenges, vibrant threads of hope continue to weave through the fabric of society. Across the nation, startups are flourishing along bustling side streets, teachers dedicated to their craft are finding innovative ways to engage their students, and a new generation of young people is choosing to invest their time, energy, and passion into building sustainable futures right here at home.
